What is Excessive Sweating / Axillary Hyperhydrosis?
It is caused by over-active stimulation of the sympathetic nerves which control the sweat glands. Excessive sweating is a normal biological response to cool the body when it is hot, however it can also be exacerbated by certain factors which excite nervous stimulation, such as emotional distress, consumption of alcohol and spicy foods. However for sufferers of excessive sweating Hyperhydrosis, there is a constant degree of sweating even without encountering these triggers.
The exact cause of excessive sweating remains unknown, however it is thought to be genetically associated. For sufferers of excessive sweating, the condition can lead to low self-esteem, withdrawal from social activity and constant anxiety. But thankfully we have a very successful treatment, which can relieve up to 90% of excessive underarm sweating!
Hyperhydrosis / Excessive Sweating Treatments
We use the same treatment for excessive sweating as we do anti-wrinkle injections. Anti-wrinkle injections are made of purified protein, which is used to block the neurotransmitter responsible for stimulating activity of the sweat glands. Anti-wrinkle injections are a proven and safe medication which have over a 20 year clinical safety profile. Treatment is administered by medical practitioners and involves a series of superficial injections in the underarms.
Pre-Treatment Info
Treatment Comfort
Treatment only takes minutes, and for most patients it is a very comfortable procedure. If required, we can offer a topical anaesthetic to ensure the treatment is as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
Longevity
You may begin to notice a reduction in sweating within 1-2 weeks, and for most patients, results can last up to 6 months. Treatments are best scheduled between 5 -7 months to maintain results.
Side Effects
Minor side effects post excessive sweating treatment include temporary localised inflammation, including redness, swelling and small lumps at the treatment site. These symptoms are very normal and will usually subside within a couple of days. There is also the potential for temporary, minor bruising at the treatment site.
Post-Treatment Care
It will generally take between 2-3 days for the injected anti-wrinkle treatment to settle into the target region. Therefore it is important during this time to refrain from massaging, rubbing or applying heavy pressure to the treatment areas. It is also best to abstain from exercise for 48 hours post treatment.
At DermaCare you will be scheduled a follow-up appointment 2 weeks post treatment to assess the results. We endeavour to ensure your absolute satisfaction with the treatment outcome.
Contraindications
Hyperhydrosis excessive sweating treatment is not suitable if you are pregnant, potentially pregnant or breast feeding.
